New Lives
We are the "children," mainly Jewish, who came as refugees from Europe directly to the USA. During the war, as we grew up in America, we all acclimated ourselves to fit into the “melting pot” that constitutes this remarkable country. The children/adults succeeded in many fields and endeavors. When requesting information, OTC received the following replies:
- “We were supposed to be in the fifth grade, but due to our poor English we had to go back to the third grade. However we did get to the fifth grade very shortly thereafter and were not held back.”
- “Graduated with a business degree.”
- “Received a degree in journalism and public relations.”
- “Became a M.D.”
- “Joined the National Park Service, working as a Ranger in Yellowstone Park, entered the Army, became an orthodontist.”
- “Became a pharmacist.”
- “A B.S. in Zoology, a B.S. in Pharmacy, a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Chemistry.”
- “A Special Education teacher.”
- “A writer of children’s books.”
Thus, the OTC group of children did not add to the burdens of the USA as some had predicted, but became a very successful new influx of talent for America!
This is confirmed in a study done by a Harvard University Research Group.
